Task 2.1: Research Into Existing Products - Computer/Video Games

This is a mind map analysing the trailer of the video game Fallout 4. From watching the trailer I found out that the game is based on a post apocalyptic society and survival. This was shown through the technology for example the aircraft and also shown through the abandoned land/houses and fires etc. A dog is walking around the house which is firstly shown in the post apocalyptic society and then are shown how they were prior to this which lets the audience know that a disaster has occurred. Towards the middle of the trailer the dog is shown running through the town because war is announced. A flashback is also shown here of when war was announced before and there were people running through the neighbourhood but now it is only the dog who remains.

At the beginning the song "Its All Over" is played which gives the audience a feel good factor and is as easy listen. This song is from the 1950's which indicates to the audience the time-frame in which the video game is set. Then the music changes to more jumpy, loud and lively music to quicken the pace and keep the audience hooked so they will want to buy and play the game.

The editing had many elements including flashbacks, cross cutting, horizontal tracking and panning. This mixture of editing types keeps the trailer interesting as it isn't just the same repetitive edits that can become tedious.

I believe the target audience for this game would be a male between the ages of around 16-20 who are particularly part of the "Gamer" subculture. This is due to the theme of violence and war isn't really shown to be popular with females and for men being part of the action and saving people/place may make them feel heroic. Also the story behind this game may not be as easy to understand for younger people.

This trailer would be appropriate to show on TV prior to the watershed time (9pm) as no violence actually occurs during the trailer, it is just preparing for the war. Also there is no swearing or sexual activity which would be considered inappropriate for daytime television.
