We decided to do our storyboard online on storyboardthat.com because we thought we could present our ideas more clearly than if we drew it. We didn't make this a final, structured storyboard for our music video as we thought there would be too many shots to replicate s we chose 6 main scenarios that we will re-create and develop.
Breakdown of shots:
Shot 1 is going to be set in a rural setting either in a field of forest as we thought this would give a lonely atmosphere due to there being so much open space surrounding the individual. This idea was inspired idea by Leona Lewis video "Run" which looked effective due to that atmosphere of isolation. We would use a wide range of shots and angles including close ups because they show the emotion of the artist, as well as long shots because you would be able to see the artist and the scenery.
Shot 2 is set in a church as we will have the artist in the church which will tell the audience that she is mourning/grieving over a lost one. In the original video for Beyonce's "Heaven" she was shown in a church surrounded by few other people who looked upset. Beyonce is shown crying in the church and we thought it would be good to reflect a bit of her video in to ours to show that we thought about the original video and used it to influence our video. We thought about having an establishing shot in the church at the start of the video of the artist walking into the church in slow motion because it will set the mood of the video right from the start.
Shot 3 will be set in a graveyard of some sort. The clips in the graveyard will not be too prevalent throughout the video as we just want snippets of it throughout of the artist grieving and reminiscing. We will probably mainly use panning shots and also close ups because as mentioned before the audience will be able to see how the character is feeling. This is important because although there will be sad elements where the artist is grieving there will also be positive and happy parts where the artist is reminiscing on good times she had with her lost loved one, close ups will show this contrasting emotion well.
Shot 4 will be the artist sitting on a stool in a dark room or stage. We got this idea from Whitney Houstons "I Will Always Love You" as we thought it would be simple and effective to just have the dark room and the artist on there own singing as it will connote isolation. This ensures we have the performance element in the music video. We thought it would look most effective if we had the camera panning around the artist in the middle. This could be used with a a dolly. We want to surround the artist by mirrors too so through the camera we can see the artist looking at her reflection. At our sixth form we have a hall where we can put the black curtains up and film this scene there. Also they have mirrors in the dance department so we can ask to use these.
Shot 5 is a flashback of the happy times the artist experienced with her loved one as we didn't want every shot to be sad. We don't want it to be too similar to the original song where they are driving to a beach, taking photos etc so are going to change the memories the artist has experienced. Also we are going to do a point of view shot of the character looking out of the window
Shot 6 is supposed to be a scenic shot similar to the one in Alexandra Burke's "Hallelujah" where the artist is standing performing and in the background there is lots of candles or people holding handles/lights. The main reason for this idea was to bring some light into a dark situation and to show that there is hope.
